The state limit
Under Proposition 64, California adults 21 and older may legally grow up to 6 living cannabis plants per residence (not per person) for personal use, whether indoors or outdoors, regardless of how many adults live there.
Local rules can be stricter
Cities and counties can impose additional restrictions — for example, requiring plants to be grown indoors, or in a locked, enclosed area not visible from a public place. Los Angeles has its own municipal rules on top of the state limit, so it’s worth checking current City of LA cannabis ordinances before planting.
What’s not allowed
Selling homegrown cannabis without a license is illegal regardless of how much you grow. Personal cultivation is strictly for personal use.
